In 1987, Genesee &
Wyoming Industries (GWI) purchased five of the Southern Pacific's seven
remaining branch lines in southern Louisiana, along with trackage rights
over the SP main line between New Iberia and Schriever. These lines
were the Supreme, Houma, Bayou Sale, Cypremort, and Midland branches.
Operations began on 16 March as the Louisiana & Delta Railroad.
The
transaction included six SP locomotives: SW1200's 2250, 2263 and 2264;
and GP9E's 3433, 3434 and 3790. Five of the locomotives became
Louisiana & Delta units and were repainted on the L&D at New
Iberia, while the sixth loco – SW1200 2264 – was assigned to GWI's
Rochester & Southern. The 2264 was not retired by the SP until June
1986, three months after the other units, and was repainted as R&S 107
at Bayou Railcar in Holden, Louisiana. When GWI formed a subsidiary –
G&W Switching Services – to provide contract switching services, the
GWSS CF7's were numbered right about the L&D's. All but one of the
L&D's original locomotives were replaced with CF7's, and these are
being supplanted with GP10's and a GP38.
Two of the
original lines – the Houma and Supreme Branches – have been abandoned,
but the L&D has acquired the Patoutville Spur and Espee's two
remaining branch lines, the Lockport and Breaux Bridge lines. L&D
also provides switching service for the BNSF out of Schriever, and
operates a seasonal sugar cane train between Lake Charles and Baldwin.
Its main line trackage rights now extend over the BNSF from Boutte to
Iowa Junction, and over the UP from Iowa Junction to Mallard Junction
(Lake Charles). The railroad's headquarters are in the former SP depot
in New Iberia.
