The twenty-seven four-unit ABBA sets of these units were originally delivered as class DEF-4, the middle "E" was dropped within a few years and became DF-4. The DEF-4/DF-4 B-units were built as follows:


	-65:12 gearing
	-1200 gallon fuel tanks
	-dynamic brakes
	-steam generators
	-no nose MU connections


These units were built as reserve passenger units with steam generators. It was intended for them to run with their A units which were built with steam generator controls. Over the years, various modifications were done to these units. Their associated A units became SP 6186-6239 in late 1949. Sixteen F7B units of class DF-4 were transferred to the T&NO in 1952-53 as T&NO 526-541. Nine of these units (T&NO 526-534) came back to the SP and their previous 1949 numbers in 1957. The remaining seven units stayed as T&NO 535-541. All of the A and B units were retired between 1959 and 1970 and sold to EMD or GE for trade on new units or scrapped as a result of wrecks.
