10' Interior Height Box Cars:

SP's fleet of 40' steel box cars acquired from the mid 1930's through the early 1950's were mostly built to the specification of 10' (nominal) inside height, making them unusual when measured against similar cars built for other railroads during the same time period. Many of these cars were subsequently rebuilt in the 1960's with larger 10' doors with a large diagonal yellow stripe and beefed up side sills for lumber service in the Pacific Northwest.
