SP 85' Flat Cars
The SP was an early proponent of the longer platform flats that came available in the late 1950's and early 1960's for TOFC and Auto Pack service. Many of the early 85' flats were built to the Clejan design for handling trailers more efficiently at termainals than circus style loading or unloading. However, other difficulties with the concept spelled its demise. Some of the very first cars of this type which were built at 79'-6" were later stretched to 85' and then to 89'.
