The SSW purchased a small group of eight GP40's new from EMD in early 1966 as follows:

The SP repainted 3 of the former D&RGW GP40 units that came to the railroad as a result of the SP/D&RGW merger. Two of these were original D&RGW units and one was originally a PC unit, then a CR unit prior to bein leased then purchased by the D&RGW.
