This loco was built in 11/1971 with EMD serial number 38571. She was built as a freight roadswitcher. She was painted in standard for the time black paint with xxxx herald and featured a full a sealed beam headlight and nose-mounted gyralight on the front end and a sealed beam headlight on the rear end.

She was one of three D&RGW GP40s painted in SP's scarlet and grey "bloody nose" scheme with SP Speed Lettering after the Rio Grande/SP merger.
