AC&F CF2971 Cov'd Hoppers

American Car & Foundry's CF2971 2-bay covered hopper cars marked a design change from their previous CF2970 design resulting in a car which was three feet longer and two inches lower. It also marked the end of the horizontal angle iron side stiffener and introduction of the pressed stiffening beads on the canted side plate, which was previously flat. These cars would only be producted in 1974 and 1975. Thereafter the CF2980 design would supercede reverting to the previous CF2970 external dimensions, but retaining the side plate stiffener changes.
