Covered Gons

The SP converted various groups of 50' gons (and one 65' gon) for steel transport with the addition of lids and internal bulkheads. They were continuing to make conversions of gons up until the end of the SP in 1996. It appears that UP continued the practice on ex SP gons after the merger. Also, cars appear to have been converted and renumbered, and later converted back to general service gons, but kept their assigned service numbers. The G-100-33 class were built with 329xxx series numbers, as they appear to either have been quickly retrofitted with covers, or were built with them and intended for coil steel service from the beginning. Some gons also received cushion underframes which no SP gons appear to have been built with. I would also LOVE to see a photo of the sole 65' gon (329400) which was given a cover for coil steel service.
