G-50-20 Gondolas
A roster of the G-50-20 class gondolas is provided as follows:
SP 56330-57829 (re #'d to SP 380000-381498 for general service) (re #'d to SP 350000-350299 for wood chip service) (re #'d to SP 350410-350509 for wood chip service) (re #'d to SP 351010-351109 for wood chip service) (re #'d to SP 358000=359614 for sugar beet service mixed with G-50-23 cars) (re #'d to SP 390000-390999 for wood chip service)
These 41'-0" drop-bottom composite gondolas were built by Pressed Steel Car Co. in 1948 and featured 1875 ft3 capacity and reverse regular drednaught ends.
Many cars from this class received wooden side extensions for either sugar beet or wood chip service. It appears that when renumbered, cars for wood chip service were grouped by original class, but for sugar beet service, cars were apparently renumbered mixed with cars from the G-50-23 class indiscriminately in the SP 358000=359614 number series.
These cars ran well into the 1980's in service for SP hauling sugar beets. Many were later sold to sugar producers such as Union Sugar Division of Holly Sugar as USGX 1-578.
