B-50-47 Box Cars
A roster of the B-50-47 class box cars is provided as follows:
SP 651400-651673 T&NO 70100-70175 (re #'d to SP 651674-651746)
These 50'-6" box cars were built by SP Equipment Co. in 1957 and featured 4895 ft3 capacity, DF loaders, Hydra-Cushion underframes and a single 8'-0" door. This class was one of the first classes to have Hydra-Cushion underframes installed. The parts were the first commerically manufactured parts applied to SP freight cars. Previous applications used parts manufactured directly by Stanford Research Institute.
A single member of this class (SP 651596) was repainted in an experimental red and grey scheme in December of 1958. The scheme was not adopted and the car was likely repainted quickly into standard freight car colors. A color photo of the car appears on the back cover of SPH&TS Trainline #77 (Fall 2003.) Thank you to Tony Thompson and Tim O'Connor for much of the above info.
