SP U25B page: GRIP Program
GRIP Program:
The SP began a large scale program to rebuilt its many locomotives called the GRIP (General Rehabilitation and Improvement Program) in 1970. It encompassed many models of locomotives, one of which was the U25B. A total of only 2 U25B's went through the program being rebuilt at Sacramento, CA by SP shop forces. The two U25B rebuilds were renumbered to SP 3100-3101 in 1979. One of the rebuilds was chosen to be repainted into the SP's red, white and blue bicentennial paint scheme.
