SP SD45 page: Locomotives with "Elephant Ears"
About twelve SP SD45's were equipped with air-intake shrouds on the rear of the units to test the tunnel motor concept. The shrouds were all removed around 1974 following the delivery of the SD45T-2 "tunnel motors."
