SP NW2 page: GRIP Program

GRIP Program:

The SP began a large scale program to rebuilt its many locomotives called the GRIP (General Rehabilitation and Improvement Program) in 1970. It encompassed many models of locomotives, one of which the EMD NW2 switchers were a part. Only engines from the SP and T&NO were part of the program, however. The four SSW units, the ten 1941-built SP units and one each SP and T&NO unit from the 1949-built units were never rebuilt.
