C&EI 1-5
C&EI 1-5 (to C&EI 64700-64704; to C&EI 118100-118104)
These 40'-6", 50 ton express box cars were built by PS (Lot 5808) in 9/1945. They featured 3713 ft3 capacity. They were used on the C&EI's passenger trains for express cargo and featured Allied full cushion trucks, special yellow-orange paint and "Speed Service" logo. Each car featured special lettering as follows:
C&EI 1: ROUTE OF THE DIXIE LIMITED C&EI 2: ROUTE OF THE DIXIE FLYERS C&EI 3: ROUTE OF THE DIXIE FLAGLER C&EI 4: CHICAGO St.LOUIS SOUTHWEST C&EI 5: CHICAGO EVANSVILLE SOUTHEAST
It is my THEORY that these cars were removed from express service during the 1950's and renumbered into the regular freight car numbering scheme as C&EI 64700-64704. I cannot verify this, but there is evidence in the ORER to indicate this is a possibility. Also, it appears that they were renumbered again in the mid to late 1960's following the C&EI's merger into the MP system as C&EI 118100-118104, again just a theory. It is not known if/when they lost their special paint and Allied full cushion trucks. If you know, please do share.
These cars have been offered in both HO and N scale with correct paint and lettering and Allied full cushion trucks.
