American Car & Foundry's CF2980 2-bay covered hopper cars marked a design change back their previous CF2970 design resulting in a car which shared the same external dimensions with that design. It continued the same side stiffening treatment introduced on the CF2971 cars with the elimation of the horizontal angle iron side stiffener and introduction of the pressed stiffening beads on the canted side plate. The CF2980 would feature a longer draft pocket than either of the previous designs, however. These cars would be producted from 1976 onward.
