Sunset Limited - Equipment
The Sunset Limited has had some very interresting equipment associated with it over the years, from the original T&NO PA-1's and Budd stainless steel lightweight cars to the current Amtrak Genesis engines and Superliner cars. Here, we will present a reference to the various types of equipment used on the Sunset, so you can put a face with all of those numbers.
Locomotives:
T&NO PA-1's |
These units were the original units bought to replace steam on the Sunset in 1949 east of El Paso, Texas. They were soon renumbered T&NO 200-211 eliminating the letter suffix. They were delivered in the SP's then standard passenger locomotive colors of orange and red, often referred to as the Daylight paint scheme. They soon started running only between San Antonio, Texas and New Orleans, Louisiana. In the mid to late 1950's, they were bumped from the Sunset altogether and replaced by SP E-units for the entire run from Los Angeles, California to New Orleans. They were eventually repainted in the SP's new standard colors of grey and red and used on secondary trains such as the Argonaut until late 1963 when that train was completely discontinued. They lived their last days out on the Pacific Lines of the SP until the mid to late 1960's. |
