The Southern Steam Trips Page

Well after a long time and a lot of promises that I will get it done, it is a reality. This page will showcase photos of the steam excursions run by the Southern Railroad out of New Orleans, LA known as the DEEP SOUTH STEAM EXCURSIONS. The majority of these trips ran from New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal (NOUPT) to Hattiesburg, MS and returned that same evening. There was usually a Saturday and a Sunday trip every year. My family always rode the Saturday trip. The trips were primarily held late in the Southern's schedule in November. There was talk of changing the trips to the spring time for a change, but this was never done.

When I was 5 years old, I already had a keen interest in trains. My Grandmother was well aware of this and when she saw an advertisement for the trip in the newspaper, she passed it on to my parents who thought it would be a nice idea also. Little would they know that it would cement a lifelong love for railroading and become a yearly family ritual. The year was 1972 and it would be the first trip to the Crescent City for the queen of the Southern's excursion fleet, the resplendant green and silver Southern 4501 mikado type locomotive. A trip the previous year was the first true Southern Steam Excursion out of New Orleans and was powered by the Southern 722 consolodation. A trip the next year was in conjunction with an NRHS convention in New Orleans and featured excursions to Pascagoula, MS and was run over the L&N railroad.

My family would ride the majority of the trips for the next thirteen years even when the only power availible was the Southern's FP7 covered wagons. The following pages detail the equipment and events of each year's excursions. Also included is an equipment page for details of individual locomotives and cars used in excursion service. Come with me as we discover the way steam excursions were when they were done right. All Aboard!
