In the early days of the double stack revolution, the SP acquired a fair number of second hand sets of 5-unit double stack cars. Going along with the SP tradition of not assigning class designations to cars acquired second hand, these cars had their reporting marks restenciled and went right to work. The numbers were not even changed on the first few cars. This probably set the stage for the remaining cars to be numbered in the 2xxx series.
