R-50-1 Reefers
A roster of the R-50-1 class reefers is provided as follows:
PFE 100001-100400 (re #'d PFE 100401-100475; 1941; R-50-1-4) (re #'d PFE 100476-100500; 1941; R-50-1-3) (re #'d PFE 200301-200375 & 200379-200587; R-50-5)
These 47' wood-sheathed ice bunker refrigerator cars were all built to the same basic design by PC&F in 1930 and featured XXXX ft3 capacity, fishbelly underframes and 4'-0" dual hinged doors.
PFE 100036 was rebuilt as a 2-compartment car with 4 doors, 8 hatches, plywood sheathing, 4/5 ends in 1940, reclassed R-50-1-2. It was retired by 1944. Twenty-five cars were rebuilt with steel rooves and 4/5 ends in 1941. They were renumbered 100476-100500, reclassed as R-50-1-3, and subsequently reclassed as R-50-3 circa 1945. Another 75 cars were rebuilt with steel rooves and 4/5 ends in 1941. They were renumbered 100401-100475, reclassed as R-50-1-4, and subsequently reclassed as R-50-4 circa 1945. Another 3 cars were rebuilt and renumbered 200376-200378. The 284 remaining cars were rebuilt for frozen food service in 1945-47, and renumbered 200301-200375 & 200379-200587 and reclassed as R-50-5.
