H-100-39 Covered Hoppers
SP 496450-496699 built 7-8/1980 Golden West numbers: CRLE 539000 CRLE 539002-539014 CRLE 539030-539038 GVSR 539800-539808 UP numbers: SP 497000-497002 (ex 496544, 496452, 496517) SP 497003-497005 (planned but not done)
These 3-bay covered hoppers were built by AC&F in 7-8/1980. They featured 4650 ft3 cubic capacity.
Around 30 of these cars were sent through the Golden West Service program (see above.) Also, after the UP/SP merger in 1996, the UP repainted and renumbered a handfull of 4650 ft3 AC&F hoppers into the 497000 series. They were plain grey with the UP shield in the upper right hand corner and 14" reporting marks and numbers. I got to see one (SP 497002, ex 496517) on July 7, 2010 in Erath, LA. See below.
