As a tragic side note, thirty-eight of these cars (along with thirty-one D&RGW open hoppers) were destroyed in a tragic accident in San Bernadino, CA in May 1989 where a unit trona train got out of control coming down Cajon Pass and jumped the tracks into a residential neighborhood at Duffy St.
