F-70-10 Flat Cars
A roster of the F-70-10 class flat cars is provided as follows:
SP 142550-143549 (re #'d SP 562855-563854; 598200-598202)
T&NO 24767-24796 (leased from Pacific Lines in late 50's for TOFC)
T&NO 6500-6514 (leased from Pacific Lines in late 50's for plasterboard service)
These cars were built in 1953-54 by SP Equipment Co. They featured a 53'-6" loading platform and were welded in construction. All of the cars were originally Pacific Lines with the T&NO cars being leased as above. These cars were a very important part of the SP freight car fleet through the 80's. They were very similar to the F-70-7's except they lacked the rivet detail as they were welded cars. There is a nice photo of T&NO 24776 in the Morning Sun book "Southern Pacific in Color" with SPT 9154 early TOFC van loaded. The combined F-70-7 & F-70-10 fleet numbered over 3000 cars!
Also, three cars from this class were retrofitted with Hydra Cushion underframes and renumbered as SP 598200-598202 in the early 1960's.
Special thanks to Bill Kelly, Tony Thompson and Tim O'Connor for much of the above info.
