This loco was built in 1/1953 with EMD construction number 17157. She was built as a freight engine. She was painted in standard for the "tiger stripe" colors. This unit and sister SP 5289 did not receive a large ash can headlight, and they received an extra fifteen tons of ballast for some reason. Also, note that the construction numbers and unit numbers are out of sequence.

She was assigned number SP 2709 in the 1965 system renumbering.

All of the SD7's were renumbered as a group in 1973 to make room for new MP15 switch engines. This unit was renumbered SP 1409.

She entered the GRIP program and emerged as SP 1532 in 4/24/1980.
