SP 8470

Photo by: Gary Perazzo - Oakland, CA - December 20, 1980

This loco was built in 4/1966 with EMD construction number 7861-61.

She was rebuilt and renumbered to SP 7342 as part of the SP's GRIP program on 12/17/1980. The (second) most visible external change was the addition of a full set of Gyralight to the rear of the unit. At GRIP, she was repainted in a Daylight inspired paint scheme. The scheme had several variations over time with each side of the unit featuring a different variant at times. She was assigned to assist the SP 4449 4-8-4 steam locomotive on many occasions, most notably on various legs of her trip to New Orleans for the 1984 World's Fair, usually with similarly painted SD44R SP 7399.

She was repainted back to bloody nose in early 1989.
