SP SD39 page: Locomotives renumbered in 1993
SP renumbered SD39's:
The merger of the SP and Rio Grande railroads brought about few overlaps in locomotive numbering, however, there was the potential for conflict with SP's SD39's in the 5300 series and D&RGW's SD45's in same series. Steps were taken to mitigate this in 1993 by renumbering two of the SP's SD39's into the high 5200 series just below the existing fleet. Only two units were ever renumbered, however, SP 5315 to 5296 and SP 5317 to 5298.
