This loco was built in 5/1953 with FM construction number 12-L-733 as FM demonstrator unit TM-4. She was purchased by the SP on 11/27/1953. She was built without a steam generator, but was retrofitted with one in 4/1954.

She was renumbered SP 3021 in the 1965 system renumbering.
