GRIP Program:
The SP began a large scale program to rebuilt its many locomotives called the GRIP (General Rehabilitation and Improvement Program) in 1970. It encompassed many models of locomotives, one of which was the GP9. A total of 293 GP9's went through the program being rebuilt at either Sacramento, CA or Houston, TX.
