T&NO 429

This loco was built in 5/1956 with EMD builder's number 21413. She was built as a freight engine. She was painted in standard for the time black widow colors and featured a single dual sealed beam headlight on each end.
She was assigned number SP 3551 in the 1965 system renumbering.
She entered the GRIP program and emerged as SP 3423 in 12/1975.
This locomotive was involved in an accident at Boutte, LA (just west of Avondale) on 12/15/1978 where the train struck a loaded tanker truck. There were 3 non-crew fatalities. SP engineer Roger Ohlsson snapped these pics a few days after the accident at Avondale yard. Here is a link to an accident report on the incident.
