T&NO 281

This loco was built in 5/1954 with EMD serial number 19483. She was built as a passenger engine with a boiler in her nose. She was setup with dual control stands for operation in either direction, thus she had wings on her front and rear. She was painted in standard for the time black widow colors and featured Pyle oscilating dish signal lights and sealed beam headlights on both ends.
During the early 1960's, she left the T&NO for California.
She was renumbered as 5895 when she entered passenger service on the west coast.
She was assigned number SP 3001 in the 1965 system renumbering.
She entered the GRIP program and emerged as SP 3194 in 4/1978.
When CalTrain took over the San Francisco to San Jose commute operations from the SP around 1985, SP 3194 became just another freight GP9 until being retired by Union Pacific on 03/26/1997. Then on 08/15/1997, she was purchased and donated to the Golden Gate Railroad Museum. She is currently operational and used occasionally at the Niles Canyon Railway.
She also has her own FaceBook page.
