T&NO 280

Tony Johnson photo - San Francisco, CA - 04/29/1974

This loco was built in 5/1954 with EMD serial number 19482. She was built as a passenger engine with a boiler in the nose. She was setup with dual control stands for operation in either direction, thus had wings on the front and rear. She was painted in standard for the time black widow colors and featured Pyle oscilating dish signal lights on both ends.

During the early 1960's, this unit left the T&NO for California.

She was renumbered as 5894 when she entered passenger service on the west coast.

She was assigned number SP 3000 in the 1965 system renumbering.

She entered the GRIP program and emerged as SP 3187 in bloody nose paint in 4/1975.

She was repainted into CalTrain colors as that entity began to take over the San Francisco to San Jose commute operations from the SP.

At some point she was repainted back into bloody nose paint after CalTrain assumed complete operation of the commute line. She was then placed into the regular freight pool.

She was leased to upstart California Northern for a brief time around 1993.

She was retired in July 1994 and in Feb. 1995 it was sold to Omni-Trax.
