SP 5836:

This loco was built in 4/1959 with EMD construction number 25136. She was built as a freight engine. She was painted in newly adopted grey and red bloody nose scheme and featured a full 5 light headlight arrangement on each end.

She was assigned number SP 3699 in the 1965 system renumbering.

She entered the GRIP program and emerged as SP 3847 in 4/1977.

She was renumbered into a switcher series as SP 2872 in 1978.

As of April 2015, this engine was stored unservicable and full of graffiti in Eureka, CA at the former Northwestern Pacific Railroad yard along with three other ex SP GP9's. It is rumored that all four engines will be relocated and restored in some way. It is hoped that they would be made operable once again.

As of September 2025, it appears that this unit has been scrapped on site.
