SP 5697

This loco was built in 4/1956 with EMD construction number 21390. It was built as a freight engine. It was painted in standard for the time black widow colors and featured a full 5 light headlight arrangement on each end.

She was assigned number SP 3530 in the 1965 system renumbering.

She entered the GRIP program and emerged as SP 3439 in 7/1977.

The above photo by Bob Batson taken at Hearne, TX during the 1980's shows that at that time, it featured a unique front headlight arrangement. It featured the twin sealed beam light and red UDE light only with no gyralight. The rear arrangement was not visible in the photo. It is not known if this was the arrangement it featured as rebuilt or whether it was modified at some point.
