SSW 9710

Rob Sarberenyi photo - Roseville, CA - August 1996

This loco was built in 5/1990 with EMD construction number 896003-46. She was built as a freight unit, and featured sealed beam headlights mounted between the number boards, large SSW on the nose, standard Cotton Belt lettering on the long hood and standard SP/SSW grey and red paint.

This unit was wrecked twice in the first few years of operation and returned to service both times. The first time was on 01/20/1993 at Eola, IL after which she was rebuilt by VMV Enterprises. She was again wrecked on 07/26/1994 at Harwood, TX but was rebuilt once again, this time emerging as SP 9710 with speed lettering. She is the only known SSW GP60 to have received SP speed lettering. She lasted to the UP merger.
