SP 3197

This loco was built in 11/1974 with EMD construction number 74619-01. She was built to supplement the SP's commute locomotive fleet. She was equipped with a steam boiler and other outfittings for passenger operations on the San Francisco to San Jose commute line and other special assignments. She was built painted in standard grey and red SP colors, but was repainted on 06/17/1975 to special red, white and blue bicentennial colors to commmemorate the nation's 200th birthday. As such, she was often chosen to head special passenger assignments. She was repainted back into standard bloody nose colors in May 1983.
After the transfer of the SP's commute operations to CalTrain, she was renumbered SP 7600 and began a new life as just another standard freight GP40-2 on 06/25/1985, just over a decade after having received her special paint. It is not know at this time if her steam boiler was retained at all, disconnected for possible future use or completely removed. More research is needed.
She was the only one of the three SP GP40P-2 units to receive SP Speed Lettering.
She was on the active SP roster upon that road's assimilation into the UP system and operted for several more years until being officially retired by UP on 7/10/2002. She eventually became IHB 4010.
