SP GP38-2 page

Original orders:
The SP rostered two distinct groups of GP38-2's. The first group was purchased new from EMD in 1980 as SP 4800-4844. These units came decked out with all of the options that EMD could provide: SP light packages on both ends, L-shaped windshields, dynamic brakes, large front plow, anticlimber and cab-mounted air conditioner. The second group came in the form of lease units that had been built for CSX predecessor roads. These units were initially delivered numbered SP 151-170, though possibly not all numbers in that group existed. They were later renumbered above the SP's first group of GP38-2's as SP 4845-4873, but again, that series may not have been complete. It is assumed that they were purchased at some time by SP, but that is not certain. They were much more spartan that the SP's original units and can be easily distinguished due to their lack of oscilating lights and other features.
