SP GP20 page: GRIP Program

GRIP Program:

The SP began a large scale program to rebuilt its many locomotives called the GRIP (General Rehabilitation and Improvement Program) in 1970. It encompassed many models of locomotives, one of which was the GP20. A total of xx GP20's went through the program being rebuilt at either Sacramento, CA or Houston, TX. It is interesting to note that for the 1965 renumbering, the Cotton Belt units were grouped together numerically before the SP units and for the GRIP numbering, that was reversed.
