SSW 330

David Ellzey photo - Lafayette, LA

This loco was built in 04/1950 with EMD construction number 11628. She was built as a 1500 hp FP7 A-unit. She was painted in the Cotton Belt's version of the Daylight paint scheme. She was the ONLY SP F unit to EVER wear this paint scheme.

She was renumbered to SSW 306 at Tyler, TX on 03/30/1952. She was leased to the SP, initially spending several weeks working passenger trains around Oakland, CA before being sent to Los Angeles Shops to be renumbered to SP 6462 on 01/06/1960. She was leased to the T&NO on 01/27/1961.

She was used to power the former Argonaut between Houston, TX and New Orleans, LA during the early sixties rotating with ex T&NO PA units SP 6060 & SP 6066. After the end of that train in late 1963, she moved back to California and worked various passenger assignments until her retirement. She was one of three FP7's (along with SP 6453 & SP 6460) NOT sold to Amtrak.

A nose mounted gyralight was added by the SP.

She was involved in some sort of accident in Paragould, AR in 1955 and rebuilt and returned to service. Also her original 16-567B prime mover was replaced with a 16-567BC at some point.

She was retired on 09/1971 and sold to GE (via Precision Engineering Corp.) on 05/1972, parted out and scrapped.
