These cars carried a distinctive box on top of their tank near each end, and initially wore prominent Tenneco lettering and emblems.
Beginning in the APR 1987 ORER – as indicated by the orange stripe on the SUMMARY table – the 39 cars remaining in this series were listed as having a capacity of 138,000 pounds instead of 270-272,000; but they were still shown with their original AAR class of T649. The "9" meant that they held at least 31,500 gallons. This lower capacity was almost certainly an error, but the cars were listed like this until the last one was removed in JUL 1991. Notice how the quantity decreased from 28 to one in JUL 89, and then the last car was listed all by itself for almost two years.
Later in life, at least some of these cars were used to transport amonia for Valley Nitrogen Producers (later J.R. Simplot) and several of them ended up at industries around California after the were retired. At least one car from from this group, the 38032, survived into the 21st Century at Bakersfield, CA; although it was remarked JFSX sometime between late 2008 and late 2010. Lettering on the car showed that it was built in August 1967 and last inspected on 2-12-76.
