This loco was built in 6/1978 with EMD serial number 766066-1. She was built as a road switcher, model GP40X, a precursor of the GP50 model only built for four railroads, Southern, Santa Fe, Union Pacific and Southern Pacific.

She became NS 7000 upon the Norfolk Southern merger.
