This loco was built in 4-10/1971 with EMD serial number 37311. She was built as a freight roadswitcher, model GP38AC, with a high, short hood.
She was renumbered to free up her number for the former CP 4-6-4 2839 which was in excursion service on the Southern at the time. She became SOU 2887:2. When the steam locomotive left excursion service in the early 1980's, she regained her original number, SOU 2839.
She became NS 2839.
