This loco was built in 9/1952 with EMD serial number 17373. She was built as a freight engine. She featured a sealed beam headlight in her front and rear ends. As with all SAL GP7s, she did not feature dynamic brakes.

She was rebuilt to a GP9 by EMD on order 8040 in 3/1956, but she retained her original number.

She became SCL 981.
