This loco was built in x/1971 with EMD serial number 35624. She was built as a freight roadswitcher, model GP38AC with a high short hood.

She was painted in an experimental "white stripe" paint scheme. It is unclear at this time how long she wore this scheme or if she was built this way or repainted into it at some point after delivery. Online images are dates at least from 1980-1988.

She became NS 4104.

She was rebuilt to a GP38-2 and renumbered NS 5504 along with other former Southern GP38 and GP38AC units by the NS and given a new short front hood.
