This loco was built in 8/1978 with EMD serial number 776099-16. She was built as a freight roadswitcher, model SD40-2. She was the second MP SD40-2 to wear this number. The first was renumbered into the MP 6000 series to signify her service on run-through coal trains with the D&RGW. This unit differed significantly from this group in being built to standard MP specifications of no dynamic brakes or oscilating lights.
