MP 83-85:
After the MP bought the C&EI, it was required to divest itself of certain assets, both routes and equipment, to competitor L&N. I wish I knew more about this process, but at a very high level that is what happened. So many of the C&EI's locomotives and freight cars became L&N. This is very true of their GP7 fleet. However, not all of the GP7's went to the L&N, some remained as MP units. Three such units (at least) were renumbered MP 83-85. It is strange why MP elected to reuse these numbers or for what purpose the renumberings were, but I am reporting the restults here, not the reasons. If you have any more information on this topic, I would love to hear from you.
