DRGW 4000-4072

	D&RGW 4000-4072 (ex NIFX/NAFX)

These 85'-0" flat cars were built by PS and others. They were acquired by the D&RGW (leased?) during the late 1960's and early 1970's. Some of the cars seem to have had their NIFX marks changed to DRGW re-using the numbers. Some cars were apparently re-numbered by the Rio Grande from other NIFX series and placed in the 4000 series. These older 85' cars were placed into pipe service. Jim Eager provides a good summary of their acquisition and origins as follows:

I have gaps in my ORER coverage, but these cars were first listed
sometime between the 10/68 issue and and the 7/69 issue, when they
were listed as 4015-4063, 41 cars total, and noted as having perma
stakes for pipe service.

From ORER's:

	 7/69	4015-4063	41 cars

	 7/70	4015-4063	45 cars

	 4/71	4015-4063	46 cars

	 1/72	4015-4072	47 cars

	 1/74 4000-4015 5 cars (4000, 4004, 4012, 4014, 4015)
		  4021-4023 3 cars
4026-4030 5 cars PS (lot 8619B) built cars
		  4032-4049	18 cars " " " " "
		  4054-4072	19 cars
		TOTAL 50 cars

	10/76	4000-4072	50 cars

	 4/78	4000-4072	49 cars

	 1/80	4000-4072	49 cars

	 4/82	4000-4072	46 cars

	10/83	4000-4072	39 cars

	10/88	4000-4072	23 cars

	 7/02	4000-4072 9 cars

From 1/69 D&RGW Summary of Equipment:

		  4000-4004 2 cars trilevel
		  4011-4016 5 cars bilevel
		  " " " 1 car pipe flat (4015)
		  4017-4020 4 cars trilevel
		  4021-4023 3 cars pipe flats
4024-4025 2 cars bilevel (4025 may be renumber?)
4026-4030 5 cars pipe flats (PS built; lot 8619B; 7/61)
		  4032-4049 18 cars " " " " " " "
		  4050 1 car trilevel (PS built; lot 8765; 12/62)
		  4054-4063 10 cars pipe flats
4064-4071 8 cars pipe flats (NIFX renumbers?)
4072 1 car pipe flat (ex NAFX)
		TOTAL 60 cars

It sounds like the Grande took a group of obsolete 85ft autoracks off
North American's hands and converted them to pipe flats. All of the
cars I have seen have been Pullmans, but obviously not all of them
were. That's as tightly as I can nail it down right now.
