In 1984 the BN took a pair of on-hand 2600 ft3 Airslide hopper cars and semi-permanently coupled them together creating a single car with the same road number and an "A" and "B" suffix. The remaining cars so converted were done in 1987. The following table summarizes the origins of the cars. Some pairs are from the same constituent road, but many are mixed. The prototype car, BN 413405, featured the constituent cars aligned with the B-ends facing the same direction while all subsequent cars featured the B-ends both facing outward. It also was the only car to feature the large BN logo and roadname. All later conversions lacked this lettering. Also, BN 413405 & 413406 paired cars of 55 ton origin resulting in 110 ton cars while the rest paired cars of 70 ton origins resulting in 140 ton cars.
