Take A Ride on the C&O across the Alleghany Mountains!

C&O 1656 - photo by Gary McMills

Hello, my name is Louis Schultz and I am the owner of a model railroad depicting the Chesapeake and Ohio railroad crossing the Alleghany (with an "a") mountains in May of 1949. The location was chosen because of the spectacular mountain scenery between Hinton, WV and Clifton Forge, VA. The time period was chosen to highlight the beginning of the end of steam on the C&O. The line was and remains predominantly a coal hauling road featuring a busy double track, CTC controlled (a future project for the model) main line. We replicate over thirty trains during a 24-hour session including loaded and empty coal trains, manifests, locals and passenger trains (The George Washington, The Fast Flying Virginian and the Sportsman.)
