The DB28 was originally built as the center slot lay barge LB23 in the late 1960's. The model 509 American gantry from DB12 was added atop a huge conically shaped tower on her stern in 1984 to make her into a combination derrick/lay barge. At that time, she was re-named the DB28 following the numbering progression of other barges in the McDermott fleet. The gantry mounted high on the stern gave the DB28 a much needed advantage over other barges of the day in hook height, but compromised the vessel's stability significantly.
