The DBII came to the McDermott fleet by way of the OPI merger creating J. Ray McDermott Marine in 1995. She had been built as the George R. Brown, named after one of the founders of Brown & Root. This is the same George R. Brown that the convention center in Houston is named after. Her 600 ton Clyde gantry was certainly her shortcoming, as vessels in the 2000 ton and above category were becoming the norm in the Gulf of Mexico. She did perform her share of yard work and smaller project work for J. Ray McDermott, however, even serving as a quarters barge for an offshore Shearleg lift. I used her to loadout several drill rigs inshore, but never worked her offshore.
